Tastes of Abruzzo

Food: It is hearty, with shepherd’s traditions:

  • Arrosticini, grilled lamb skewers
  • Maccheroni alla chitarra, pasta cut on a guitar-strung tool, usually served with lamb ragù
  • Pallotte cace e ove (cheese and egg dumplings)
  • Ventricina, a spicy cured salami
  • Navelli saffron
  • Pecorino di Farindola
  • Sulmona, the birthplace of sugared almonds (confetti)
  • Brodetto alla vastese along the coast

Wines:

  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the flagship red, and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is its excellent rosé.
  • Trebbiano d’Abruzzo can be age worthy and complex from producers like Valentini and Emidio Pepe.
  • Also look for Pecorino and Cococciola.
